On Saturday, February 17th, Heritage Park visited the Carnivore Preservation Trust in Pittsboro, NC. CPT is a wildlife sanctuary, providing homes to carnivores in need of rescue and educating the public about what threatens these animals in the wild, in the pet trade, and in the entertainment industry. We had a fabulous, albeit cold, tour of the sanctuary and then headed to Jordan Lake for a picnic lunch and outdoor playtime.

Our tour guide explains what makes carnivores carnivores: strong bone-shredding
back teeth and a gap in the teeth that allows them to feel an animal's pulse.

We started the tour with caracals, quick, long-eared cats of the
African savannah. Caracals are expert bird catchers.

Next was the ocelot, a beautiful small cat native to Central America and southern Texas.

To draw the ocelot out, our guide brought some of his favorite scent: CK's Obsession!
Ocelots themselves don't smell nearly as nice; they have a very strong musty odor.

With monkey-like tails, a beaver-like coat and long sharp claws, Binturongs are
quite unique. They are arboreal, fruit-eating carnivores native to SE Asia.

Beautiful and friendly, Isabella was the first tiger we visited.

We also saw one of the last Barbary leopards. Leopards are very
smart, requiring a double fence to keep them from escaping.
